The History of Aquaman – An Unpopular Superhero Gets Movie Debut in 2018

The history of Aquaman was the topic of discussion on this episode of Comic Movie-10. The Kane brothers gave a narrative of the evolution of this once odd and unpopular superhero to the most recent, and clearly more interesting character played by Jason Momoa.

Aquaman had always been a lesser-known character, catching “flack” throughout the years. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, his name is Arthur Curry and he is the King of Atlantis. He first appeared in More Fun Comics in November of 1941. His only apparent superhero skill was that he could talk to the fish. He wore the orange and green and according to Dan, he was “no one’s favorite.” Everyone liked either Batman or Superman, but if Aquaman was your favorite, you had issues.

The Superfriends series came out in the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s. The brothers recall watching the reruns. Joe pointed out that Aquaman was “sort of dorky.” It almost seemed as though the writers had to figure out a way to get him to go with the other superheroes. It wasn’t a natural fit.

In the late ‘50’s comics he became one of the founding members of the Justice League and stayed as such over the next few decades. Aquaman was in a number of Justice League movies, where, according to Dan he “maintained the role of the weirdo for a long time.
In 2011, D.C. produced a new series of 52 Justice League comic books that would be published on a monthly basis. It was here that Aquaman began to wear the yellow and green, displayed more armor, and became muscular. He was a cooler character, more durable, super strong with tough skin. Now, Joe said, he would be a “Formidable Foe.” Dan agreed that now he was a “more serious character.” Superhero fans could relate to this character.

Still able to communicate with marine life, he could now control anything connected with the sea. His abilities stretched outside of the water, and included telepathy with other animals, which could help him out of threatening situations.
Joe and Dan discussed the fact that the character had appeared in Smallville and that this was the first time there was a live action Aquaman. He was played by Alan Ritchson. He wore an orange hoodie and in a departure from the comic, was an Olympic diver.
The creator of Smallville had produced an Aquaman pilot in 2006, which never aired. Justin Hartley played the role. He had also been Green Arrow in Smallville.

This brought the Kane brothers to the newest version of Aquaman. Joe stated that no one could say Jason Momoa is a dork. Dan agreed that the character had been completely reinvented. He went on to say that regardless of what you think of the Justice League movies, Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), and Jason Momoa were the two highlights.

The release date for Aquaman is December 14, 2018. Joe wants to know what you think will happen in the movie and Dan wants to know if there is anyone out there who is a fan of the old orange and green rendition. Fancasting: Who Should Be In The Next Green Lantern Movie?

On this episode of Comic Movie-10, Joe and Dan discuss who they think would make the best candidates for casting as new Green Lantern characters, John Stewart, and Hal Jordan. They believe the creation of a film, featuring Green Lantern, or including one as part of the Justice League is overdue.

Green Lantern Favorites List

One of their favorites for the John Stewart character includes Idris Elba. Elba has played more than one super hero and having been killed off in the Marvel Universe, the timing may be perfect.

Both Joe and Dan enthusiastically agreed that a great choice for the role would also be Michael B. Jordan. They gave high praise for his role as the human torch and Dan expressed the sentiment that he was “Fantastic.” Both also thought his performance in Black Panther was “awesome.”

Another of their choices for the John Stewart role is Henry Simmons who is still currently playing the role of Mack on Agents of Shield. Some Marvel fans might not be pleased to see him go and he is expected to be on the show for at least another season. Joe describes him as the perfect “bad ass,” or “ruffian with great appeal.”

Who Should play Hal Jordan?

The Kanes moved on to discuss who they felt would best fill the role of Hal Jordan. This character needs to be likable but with an edge and a heart of gold. Topping the list and filling these requirements was Jensen Ackles, currently playing Dean Winchester in the CW series Supernatural. He was the voice of “Red Hood,” and has a fun persona that would well suit the role of Green Lantern.

John Krasinski , “needs to be a comic book hero,” according to the brothers. Joe and Dan admit to naming this star of the new series Jack Ryan, several times for many castings.

What About Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern?

Getting a pass for his previous role as Green Lantern is Ryan Reynolds. The movie was bad, not the actor and he could be given another shot at the spot, as long as it didn’t preclude his continued portrayal as Dead Pool. The Kane brothers are obvious fans of this actor as well as that of Bradley Cooper. He knocked it out of the park as the voice of Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy. Both fit the bill for good guy with rough edges.

Joe and Dan concluded with, “No CGI costumes for Green Lantern!”

Do you agree or disagree with Joe and Dan? Who else would make a great Green Lantern? How would you rate the stars the brothers have chosen? Leave your questions, comments, opinions, and as always, tune in to the next episode of Comic Movie-10.

Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker, New Set Photos

Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker, New Set Photos

On this episode of Comic Movie-10, Joe and Dan discuss the upcoming film featuring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. Unlike the Heath Ledger version some footage has already been released, sparking some excitement and discussion.\

Joaquin Phoenix Joker Makeup

In this case, Joker appears to be something of a cross between the Heath Ledger presentation, with his hair, but leaning a bit more toward the Cesar Romero rendition. They discuss the new makeup focusing on two aspects. Joe points out that blue triangles are used around the eyes with one pulling down into almost a teardrop. Dan thought all of this was fine but disliked the red nose. He admits that it is a minor issue for him. One he will eventually get over as very insignificant. Christopher Nolan had kept the Ledger makeup under wraps so that the presentation of the movie and acting took place at the same time. This is not the case with this new movie. So, there is a greater opportunity to anticipate the artistic impact.

Dan’s other concern is that this new Joker should not be a rip off of the Ledger performance. Joe isn’t so concerned with this as he is confident that Joaquin Phoenix will deliver something original.

The Killing Joke

It is pointed out that this is a movie about Joker’s origin that hearkens back to the great graphic novel, The Killing Joke. There is a scene that takes place in front of the Amusement Mile, and it appears to be a tribute to this comic. The action in The Killing Joke was set almost exclusively in an amusement park. Joe points out that this Joker has no chemical burns, and no physical scars. These are all psychological as this is a story of origin.

This movie is a “non cannon” DCU. They are calling it DC Black. In other words it will stand alone, unlike the recent Marvel’s movies that are connected and continuations. Joe and Dan are fine with this. They agree that it may be time for such a movie for DC. Perhaps it is better not to copy Marvel.

Joe asked Dan if there were any characters that he would enjoy seeing as cameos. Dan thought that anyone from The Killing Joke would be worth seeing. Getting the back-story on Alfred was what Joe thought would be interesting.

Some actors to look forward to seeing in this film are Robert DeNiro as a comedian, Zazzy Beets as Sophie Dumond and Brett Cullen as Thomas Wayne.

As always, the Kane’s ask what you think and invite you to contrubute. Leave your questions, comments, opinions, and as always, tune in to the next episode of Comic Movie-10.

5 Worst Superhero Movies

The 5 Worst Superhero Movies Ever

This episode of Comic Movie-10 explores Joe and Dan’s selections for the top five worst superhero movies of all time. In addition to their top five, they include honorable mention of the following movies, Superman IV, Steel, Green Lantern, both Ghost Rider movies, Spiderman III, and Batman Forever. If you thought those movies were bad, just wait until you hear their top five!

Coming in at number five is Superman III. The reason behind this selection is that the brothers feel the first two Superman movies were incredibly well done, while the third was disappointing. It not only lacked a storyline, but also had a likeable villain, who was not well fleshed out as a character.

At number four on the list, the brothers have placed the 2003 film, The Hulk, staring Eric Bana. It was such a bad movie that Dan points out that it took him multiple attempts to even finish the film. This is a difficult feet for comic lovers, as Joe explains that most superhero fans really try to stick through the rough movies, clinging to the positives. Only a few years later, the Hulk franchise was completely rebooted, considering the 2003 version was such a failure.

Third on the list is Catwoman, staring Halle Berry. While she is an amazing actress, who looked incredible in her suit, the film was cheesy with no solid direction. The brothers point out that the dialogue was corny, and the story felt as though the plot never picked up.

The brothers have placed Daredevil at the second spot on the list. Their reasoning for this is the lack luster of each character. They mention a scene where it appears that Daredevil and Elektra are battling each other at a playground for no apparent reason. The movies absence of a storyline, along with its boring villain, Bullseye, played by Colin Farrell, helped to create one of the worst superhero movies of all time.

And finally, number one on the list, the worst superhero movie of all time is Batman and Robin. Although the casting of this film would appear to have all of the makings for an incredible movie, that was certainly not the case. The brothers point out how Joel Schumacher’s involvement in the movie as director simply fell short after the direction of Tim Burton during the first two movies of the franchise. In addition, many of the characters were incredibly cheesy, including Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, who is supposed to be one of the most exciting villains of all time. Overall, the story fell very short of people’s expectations.

The brothers want to know if you love any of these terrible movies, or if you feel there are other movies that should have made the list. Let them know by leaving your comments, questions, and opinions. As always, tune in to the next episode of Comic Movie-10!

Antman & The Wasp review

Ant-Man & The Wasp Review

On this episode of Comic Movie-10, the Kane brothers offer a run down of the latest superhero movie, Ant-Man and The Wasp. They explain that the movie starts with Paul Rudd’s character, Scott Lang (a.k.a. Ant-Man), on house arrest. While Ant-Man has been making very public appearances, authorities are constantly checking on Lang to ensure he is still in his home during his last days of confinement.

Interestingly enough, Lang is on house arrest based on his actions during Captain American: Civil War. It was Lang’s decision to join Captain America in Germany that has led to his current situation. Joe and Dan explain that this movie is set between Captain America: Civil War, and the more recent Infinity War. While this time line can confuse some viewers, the brothers believe that overall, the story is really solid and enjoyable.

The brothers also point out that this is a much smaller story than what Marvel has been producing, which is interesting because it shows how the heroes are still working and experiencing trials between the life shattering moments that are more present in other movies. In addition, Lang’s character is shown as endearing, through his relationship with his daughter Cassie, as well as his ex and her new boyfriend. It is interesting to see how he navigates his relationships with the people around him.

Also worth mentioning is that Evangeline Lilly plays the Wasp. This is the Wasp’s first ever full-on, fleshed-out appearance on the big screen. Joe explains that Lilly’s take on the Wasp is very similar to the Wasp in the classic comic, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Lastly, the brothers explain how new technology allowed viewers to see flashbacks with well-known characters looking notably younger. They explain how this was done and how there was even a special family connection in one of the flashback scenes. Colossus vs Juggernaut Fight Scene Review

Colossus vs Juggernaut Deadpool Fight Scene Review

In this episode of Comic-Movie 10, the Kane brothers discuss the fight scene between Colossus and Juggernaut, found in the latest Deadpool movie. They also give insight into the history of these two arch rivals and explain how they have come to be the characters the world knows and loves.

Colossus, born Piotr Nikolaievitch “Peter Nicholas” Rasputin, was raised on a farm in Siberia. He became aware of his mutant powers when he rescued his sister from a tractor incident on his family’s property. After displaying his unusual strength, Professor X called on him to save the fate of the X-Men. As a result of this, Colossus became an imperative member of the X-Men team. Although he is the strongest among them, Colossus always shows how big his heart is by being a caring and empathetic character, who only fights when it is absolutely necessary.

Unlike his rival, Juggernaut has not always been so caring. Born Cain Marko, Juggernaut has always had a chip on his shoulder growing up, as his step brother Charles Xavier was given much more attention and care by his step father. While fighting alongside Charles and the rest of the American Army in Korea, Marko found himself inside of a temple, holding a ruby. This ruby had an inscription that explained he now held the power of the Juggernaut. When the temple collapsed on top of him, he was assumed dead, until he reappeared in an attempt to take down the X-Men. It is also important to understand that Juggernaut must wear his helmet, as it is the only thing protecting him from his one weakness- his brother Charles’ brain waves.

The Kane brothers then discuss the groundbreaking fight between these two characters in Dealpool 2, and how the possible Fox merger may impact all things X-Men and Avengers related. Joe and Dan mention their excitement at the possibility of a Juggernaut vs. Hulk fight in the future and question what your favorite fight would be. Casting the Next Fantastic 4 Movie

Who Would You Cast in The Fantastic Four?

On this episode of Comic Movie-10, the Kane brothers give their casting selections for a future Fantastic Four movie. As real comic fans know, there have been versions of Fantastic Four movies that unfortunately fell short.

Joe and Dan believe they have casting ideas that along with the right script would make the next Fantastic Four movie highly successful. Starting with Mr. Fantastic, the brothers selected actor John Krasinski, who has displayed his playful side on The Office, along with his more serious acting abilities in his recent film A Quiet Place.

Next up would be Bryce Dallas Howard, who is well known from her recent movie Jurassic World. The brothers point out her ability to show both confidence and quirkiness simultaneously, and how her strengths and vulnerabilities would lend themselves well to the part of Susan Storm. The role of Johnny Storm would be ideal for an actor like Zac Efron because in the brothers’ opinions because he is both a pretty boy and a tough enough actor to handle the role.

Next up, the brothers discuss Live Schreiber as The Thing. They believe he would be a good fit because he has been successful in the past at playing the big, tough guy, and his menacing voice would be ideal for the part. Lastly, the boys’ pick for Doctor Doom goes to Jon Hamm from Mad Men, as he can speak intelligently and portray someone with a lot of class, while still being capable of having a darkside.

Would you like to see a new version of the Fantastic Fours? If so, who would your choices be? Do you agree or disagree with the Kane brothers’ selection? Let them know in the comments section after watching. As always, be sure to tune in next time to Comic Movie-10 for all things comic related!

How Will The Avengers Bring Back Their Fallen Heroes?

In this episode of Comic Movie-10, the Kane brothers divulge their personal theories on how to bring back the fan favorite heroes who were eliminated by Thanos during the recent Avengers Infinity War.

The brothers explain details about the six stones found on Thanos’ gauntlet and what each stands for. They then explain how these stones relate to their theories about how characters may return to the Avengers’ universe. The first theory revolves around Nebula and how old comics indicate she is the only character capable of removing the gauntlet from Thanos’ hand. The theory is that Nebula would then be able to reverse Thanos’ snap that eliminated multiple characters.

The second theory is perhaps the most simplistic, in that it would simply be rewinding time to undo Thanos’ act through the use of the time stone. The third theory would use the reality stone under the assumption that the characters that were killed exist in a separate reality, and perhaps the two realities could collide.

The last theory uses the soul stone. The idea would be that Thanos went into the realm of the soul stone, as it is capable of pulling people in. This would have happened at the moment Thanos wanted to sacrifice Gamora’s life for the soul stone. Ultimately, the soul stone would be showing Thanos the outcome of his actions if he were to follow through with his plan. In this sense, Thanos would have learned a lesson from the soul stone as he was stuck inside of it.

What Are Your Thoughts on The Avengers?

Who Will Die In Marvel Avengers: Infinity War

On this episode of Comic Movie-10, the Kane brothers make enormous speculations about who will die in Marvel’s Avengers Infinity War. To start, the boys examined IMDB to determine which characters made it to the official site for the untitled fourth Avengers movie. After comparing the lists between the third and fourth movies, they were able to say who would certainly survive the third film. They were also able to rule out the deaths of any characters that have their own upcoming movies, including Spider-Man, and Antman.

The brothers then discuss some characters that did not make the 4th movie on IMDB so far, but how they are unlikely to die based on their popularity and the plots of the movies. This includes Zoey Saldana, Chris Pratt, and Bradley Cooper’s characters. The brothers also agree it is unlikely Don Cheadle’s character will be eliminated. Tune in to find out why they feel this way, as well as what they believe the fate might be for characters like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Paul Bettany’s Vision, Pom Klementieff’s Mantis, and Anthony Mackie’s Sam.

Also, check out why Joe and Dan feel Thanos could be at the very center of many of these possible deaths. After watching, let them know your fan theories too.
