On this week’s Imperfect Podcast, we discuss the short film Code 8, starring Robbie Amell; written by Jeff Chan and Chris Paré.  It was directed by Jeff Chan and produced by Steven Amell. Steven was supposed to play the lead roll, but due to his commitment on Arrow and the Ninja Turtles movie, he decided to become the Executive Producer instead.  The film acts as an extended trailer to gain the interest of would-be investors to help fund the full-length feature. Through Crowd funding, (Indiegogo) the film does not have to wait for a studio to green light the project. The creators of the film can make the film the way their artistic eye sees fit, without any outside interference. We discuss the quality of the short film and give our full endorsement. Watch Donovan’s latest commercial for the Dunlop MXR Reverb guitar pedal. This commercial was filmed with a small crew, but of the highest quality. The cinematography is excellent as Donovan Sell is able to combine the artist and practical side in this commercial.

Watch Donavan’s Commercial for Dunlop

On this week’s Imperfect Podcast, in honor of the new movie, Batman vs. Superman, we discuss what superheroes we would like to see in a battle. When considering the winner, it is important to state the specific scenarios in which the fight ensues, for example in a battle between Aquaman and Spiderman, Aquaman is a sure win if it takes place in the water, but in the middle of Manhattan, Spiderman would certainly be the victor. When discussing our individual picks, some of our battles obviously lean in one direction such as the Human Torch vs. Plasticman, while others are more evenly matched like Batman vs. Ironman (a battle of brains and technology) and Hawkeye vs. Green arrow (DC and Marvel counterparts). In the end, it was decided that it is too difficult to pick a winner in many of our matches, but we all agree that they would be a sight to see.

On this week’s Imperfect Podcast we review Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War. In one of our last podcasts, we made predictions about the upcoming film, and are surprised that most of those predictions were wrong. The film does not mimic the comic books in many respects, which I guess would be too predictable.

Although Spiderman was shown in the trailer, it wasn’t clear which side he was on. Some of the shots in the trailer were actually cut to exclude Spiderman in the fighting, so it could be kept a mystery. Spiderman’s role was that of the comic relief. He wouldn’t stop talking during the battle. Even though he was fighting against other superheroes, he showed them respect as if he were a baseball rookie playing against Babe Ruth.

One thing that we were all impressed with was when Tony Stark introduces a new virtual reality technology to his former college, MIT, and shows a younger version of himself. The VFX was incredible because most of the audience knows exactly how a young Robert Downey Jr. looks. It is one of those movies that you appreciate more on the big screen rather than on your TV at home, so if you didn’t get a chance to see this film, now is the time.

On this week’s Imperfect Podcast, we discuss the Top 10 TV Show Theme Songs and what makes them memorable. We speak about how some theme songs set the tone for the show, such as the carnival type music in Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, while other theme songs seem to be detached from the show.

When a syndicated sitcom is shown in reruns, the familiar theme is often shortened to make more room for advertising. In recent times, themes from new shows are written with that in mind and sometimes have as little as one chord to begin the show, such as in the series Lost. We further discuss how some classic theme songs such as Gilligan’s Island, Brady Bunch, and The Jeffersons, three of our top ten favorites, supply the background story for the entire show.

Our seven other themes, in no particular order (you have to listen to the podcast for that) are The Flintstones, Happy Days, Sesame Street, Friends, Cheers, The Family Guy (we play a recording of Seth McFarlane and Alex Borstein singing live on the James Lipton Show), and The Fresh Prince of Bellaire (Dan Kane performs the first verse with a karaoke version). We speak of several honorable mentions that did not make our group list. They are the themes from Sopranos, Incredible Hulk, Dukes of Hazzard, The Greatest American Hero, The A-Team, Welcome Back Kotter, Sanford and Son, All in the Family, and Frasier.

On this week’s Imperfect Podcast, we discuss the films of Martin Scorcese and Tim Burton. We focus on the common thread of actors each director hires for most of their films. Scorcese tends to favor Harvey Keitel, Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, and Leonardo DiCaprio, while Burton tends to favor Johnny Depp.

We also discuss the style of music each director favors, such as Scorcese’s use of rock and roll music, specifically the Rolling Stones and Burton’s use of the eerie scores of Danny Elfman. We chronicle each director’s films, from their first feature to their new releases.

Scorcese is releasing several films in 2017, two of which he directed; Sinatra and Silence. Burton is set to release Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month and has also agreed to create a live action Dumbo for Disney, with a release date sometime in 2017. The long awaited BEETLEJUICE 2 remains a possibility, but not anytime soon.
